Event description

Description

The Centre for Speech and Language Intervention Research (CSLIR) would like to invite you to a joint event hosted by CSLIR and the Department of Language & Cognition. This event will highlight the effects of intervention programmes on children’s language and reading comprehension.

Event programme

4pm Introduction by Prof Wendy Best (UCL)

4.05 - 5pm Prof Charles Hulme University of Oxford): ‘Interventions to improve children’s early language skills’

I will present the results from three Randomized Controlled Trials showing positive effects on children’s language and reading comprehension skills. Two studies evaluated the Nuffield Early Language Intervention programme. These studies show that an oral language programme delivered by teaching assistants working in schools can produce improvements in children’s oral language skills with moderate to large effect sizes. The programme also produces improvements in children’s reading comprehension skills. A third trial evaluates the effects of the Parents and Children Together (PACT) programme, a parent delivered language enrichment programme based around storybook reading. PACT produces modest effects on oral language skills with some transfer to early reading skills.
