Into Brexitland – a discussion
Fri 7 April 2017, 07:00 – 09:30 BST
It is probable that by the time you receive this invitation Article 50 will have been activated, and the publication of the European Council Brexit negotiations will be imminent. With the Scottish Government seeking a Section 30 Order (under the Scotland Act) to secure the authority to hold a Second Independence Referendum by late 2018/early 2019, the political situation is becoming increasingly complex.
Furthermore, rather than have 2 years to negotiate Brexit, it is more than likely that the negotiating period will be 18 months. Moreover with the German Federal election not being held until October this year, meaningful discussion may not take place until January 2018 (provided a new FRG government can be formed before December). Other factors such as March’s Dutch Parliamentary elections and France’s April/May Presidential elections may also hinder progress.
Given the complexity of these issues, how can the region articulate what it needs to sustain success from the Brexit negotiations?
The seminar series is run in accordance with the “Chatham House Rule”.
