Event description
An introductory course to support professionals across agencies in identifying and responding to cases of intra-familial child sexual abuse.

About this event

Why this course?

Child sexual abuse is complex. No single agency or professional can tackle this alone, but with the right training and support we can all play a role in preventing, identifying, supporting and responding to child sexual abuse.

Right now, the Centre of expertise on child sexual abuse (CSA Centre) estimates that at least 15% of girls and 5% of boys experience child sexual abuse before the age of 16.

Take advantage of this opportunity to build your knowledge and confidence in tackling child sexual abuse, whatever your profession.

Following the course, you can expect to have:

A better understanding of:

  • The scale and nature of child sexual abuse
  • How the impact of child sexual abuse presents in children and young people
  • How children communicate their experiences of sexual abuse and the professional role in helping them do this
  • How and why sexual abuse happens in families
  • Greater confidence in identifying and responding to concerns of intra-familial child sexual abuse
  • Improved ability to identify the potential signs and indicators of sexual abuse and sexually abusive behaviour

Who will run the course?

This course will be led by two expert trainers from different professional backgrounds who have significant experience in practice, training and working within multi-agency safeguarding.

What you can expect to gain:

Feedback from our existing one day training, conducted across multi-agency teams, found:

- 98% (out of 301) respondents reported they had increased their understanding of disclosures and helping children to tell

- 74% (out of 275) indicated they would use what they learnt a lot

- Several respondents noted that they found it difficult to broach the subject of sexual abuse but that our training gave them practical advice on how to initiate these difficult conversations

What past attendees have said:

“I feel much more confident now in being able to have open conversations with children and their families. The point that ‘what if I'm right?’ will stick with me, rather than doubting if I am wrong. Such a difficult topic shared so easily and smoothly – felt at ease through the session.”

Key Worker

“The training helped break down all aspects of child sexual abuse and I feel way more informed in all areas concerning the issue. Excellent training, was engaging throughout with a nice variety of how it was delivered and mix of context, information and real-life examples and advice.”

Organiser of Intra-familial child sexual abuse training

The aim of the Centre of expertise on child sexual abuse (CSA Centre) is to create a future where children are free from the threat and harm of sexual abuse by radically improving how we prevent and respond to the issue through really understanding its causes, scope, scale and impact.

Working alongside researchers, policy makers and practitioners, we ensure an evidence-informed approach is applied to better understanding and responding to CSA at both an operational and strategic level.
