The course tutor for the Carborundum Intro days will be John Wallett (johnwallettdesigner@gmail.com). Please contact him before the session if you have any questions.
Day 1 [Sunday July 27th] In this first day we aim to each create at least two plates that can be overprinted using contrasting translucent colours. After a short intro to the special features of the intaglio/collagraph process we get 'seriously sticky', applying acrylic binder mixed with Carborundum grit to the surface of our metal or plastic etching plates. The Carborundum works really well when applied using strong expressive gestures and shapes. We will also explore the effects of drawing, wiping and pressing into the paste to build added textures and create strong figurative or abstract forms.
At the end of Day 1 we will leave our prepared plates to fully dry and harden before they are ready to ink and print...
Day 2 [Option 1: Wednesday 30th July 1-5pm]
Day 2 [Option 2: Sunday 3rd Aug 4-8pm]
Day 2 we will be inking our hardened plates and printing in colour onto our etching papers to bring out the full range of textures and tones which are the characteristic of Carborundum. We will thin our inks with an oil-based 'Extender' to enable translucent under-colour show through, creating stunning colour effects and overlays. The resulting prints will show the beautiful saturated colours and textures that can be achieved with the Carborundum process.
James Anderson
The Carborundum prints in the photographs below are all © James Anderson who first introduced us to this exceptional process. James is a member of the London studio/gallery 'Hausprint'. There is a really excellent illustrated interview with James on their website here. James also has many great images of his work on his Instagram: jamesanderson1951 We would like to get James back as a visiting tutor in the future.
