Come along for a friendly music therapy taster with music therapist trainee Louis Martin.

About this event

This is an inclusive music therapy taster suitable for anyone from absolute beginners to experienced musicians. Music is for everyone, to be enjoyed by all, and anyone can play.

What is music therapy?

Music therapy is about expressing yourself and connecting with others using music. In group music therapy, players will often improvise together, and try to connect to each other's playing. Louis takes a person centred approach to music therapy and depending on the needs of the group there might be listening to music, group improvisation, singing well known songs, or just chatting.

As this is a taster session there's no expectation for attendees to share anything personal. Come with an open mind and enjoy yourself!

Session outline

Louis will start by giving a short introduction to music therapy - what it is about, and what it's used for.

He will then invite attendees to play together as a group - there's no "right" way of playing, but rather to express yourself in any way you want to. The group may also listen to music together so that people can reflect on what a particular song means for them.

Afterwards, players will be offered the chance to reflect on the experience of playing together and/or listening to music together, and to articulate what the experience meant for them.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Musical instruments

We will have 3 acoustic guitars, 1 electric guitar, 1 bass guitar, 2 keyboards, and a pair of bongos, and tambourines available for people to play in the session.

Most of the instruments used in the session will be available to borrow from the Library. If you're interested in borrowing the musical instruments and other items in future you can ask us how it works at the session.
