Introducing the Green Winged Orchid - BOOM Webinar
Event Information
About this Event
The green-winged orchid (Anacamptis morio) is one of the species the BOOM project will be restoring. Although declining in the region for many years, one population, in the Arnside and Silverdale AONB, has gone from strength to strength. This webinar will explore how habitat management and restoration by local conservation organisations and landowners has preserved this beautiful plant and opened the opportunity for BOOM to help expand its range once more.
The reintroduction work is being done in cooperation with Kew Gardens who are performing cutting edge analysis of mycorrhizal associations to help propagate robust seedlings. Dr Sarasan Viswambharan from Kew will be joining us to talk about their progress to date and the work they will be undertaking. This webinar will also feature short talks from Natural England, National Trust and the BOOM team:
- Dr Sarasan Viswambharan, Kew Gardens will be talking about mycorrhizal isolation work and orchid propagation.
- Naomi Dalton/Craig McCoy, National Trust will be talking about grassland conservation and the Trust’s work in the A&S AONB
- Glen Swainson, Natural England will talk about conservation management and orchids based on NE’s work at Gait Barrows NNR
- Ian Taylor, Natural England will be present to offer insight on his experiences working on species recovery work in the region
- Steven Lipscombe, University of Cumbria will be talking about the BOOM project
Back On Our Map (BOOM) is a multi-species reintroduction project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and working with communities, landowners and conservation groups in the Morecambe Bay area.
