About this event

Introducing the open source, award-winning, Strategy Unit Demand Model

The Strategy Unit, open-source demand model - developed in collaboration with the New Hospital Programme - has been named the 2025 winner of the Florence Nightingale Award for Excellence in Health and Care Analytics.

Join this Huddle to find out more about it - the approach we used - why it's different and how it could help transform the planning of hospital and community services across health and care in the next 10 years and beyond.

Led by Chris Beeley, Head of Data Science at the Strategy Unit, this session shows how the model helps determine the size and role of future hospitals while supporting the ‘left shift’ in care: preventing avoidable admissions and planning for services closer to home. Chris and colleagues will explore:

✅ Why the model was created and its journey so far

✅ How it helps size new hospitals appropriately

✅ How it identifies care that could be prevented or delivered in homes or communities

✅ How it builds a picture of people at risk of preventable conditions – supporting early intervention

✅ Case studies and insights so far

✅ How you can get involved in shaping and applying the model

This Huddle is free, online, and open to everyone in the public sector.

For analysts and anyone who is interested in our approach to modelling, or more generally around demand and capacity, the right-sizing of hospitals or services, quantifying 'left shift', how it's being used already and how to keep updated or even be a part of the future developments of the Demand Model.
