Event description

Description

A short astronomy course by Dr. Adrian Jannetta FRAS, covering everything in the universe! From the Sun and planets to exoplanets orbiting other stars and supernovae exploding in distant galaxies and supermassive black holes…you’ll never look at the night sky the same way again! This five-week course, which is aimed at beginners to astronomy, will be a mix of practical advice and background theory. The theoretical topics we’ll cover include the solar system, the Milky Way, the Sun and stars, galaxies and cosmology. We’ll also look at practical astronomy: using a telescope, astronomy software, star maps and finding stars and constellations in the night sky.

You can book for the full course (5 lectures) for £30 or book individual sessions at £8 each. The sessions are self-contained so that missing one will not affect your enjoyment of the other sessions!

Week 1 Exploring the solar system. Overview of the Sun, planets and major moons. Planetary motion and gravity. Asteroids and comets. What is a planet? Exoplanets and other solar systems. Origin of the solar system.

Week 2 Practical astronomy. Types of telescope. Measuring position, distance and brightness of objects in the night sky. How being in Northumberland influences our view of the night sky. Constellations and asterisms. How to find things: star hopping! Introduction to Stellarium. Bring your laptop or tablet to this session!

Week 3 The Sun and stars. The Sun is the nearest and best studied star. In this session we’ll see how astronomers classify stars and figured out how they shine. Stars come in lots of sizes and masses. Stellar evolution and death provide the necessary ingredients to make life possible in the universe. Week 4 Our place in the universe. This is a journey from Berwick to the edge of the universe! In a series of jumps we’ll see what the universe looks like as we expand our view. From planets, to stars, to galaxies, supermassive blackholes and beyond. We’ll find our place in the cosmos this week.

Week 5 In the beginning. An overview of modern cosmology. Big Big theory. Dark matter and dark energy. Universe or multiverse? Was there a time before the Big Bang? What is the fate of our universe?

Lectures last two hours and refreshments will be served.
