About this event

Introduction to Beekeeping Course

If you’ve ever considered keeping bees but are unsure where to start or lack the confidence to do so, our Introduction to Beekeeping Course can help.

Join our Ecosystems Trainer and Beekeeper, Lynda, to learn about the honeybee colony and why we keep bees at the National Botanic Garden of Wales. You’ll have the opportunity to visit our Bee Garden, put on a bee suit, open a hive and be shown its occupants – including drones, workers and the queen.

The course will run from 11am until 2pm, beginning with a theory session at the Botanic Garden’s Science Centre before moving on to a practical session in the apiary. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the day while benefitting from Lynda’s years of beekeeping experience.

One space on each of our adult courses will be fully subsidised and candidates can apply to the Growing the Future project by referral letter from a GP or registered charity to gtfadmin@gardenofwales.org.uk. Offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please note: Anyone at risk of developing an allergic reaction following a bee sting should not attend this course.

Cost

£40 (£36 for concessions and Botanic Garden Members). This includes entry to the National Botanic Garden of Wales which you will be free to explore after your course. To claim the concessionary price, please call 01558 667192.

Your Trainer

Your trainer for the day will be Lynda who has been keeping bees for over 20 years and has worked at the National Botanic Garden of Wales for 13 years. Lynda is responsible for all three apiaries at the Botanic Garden, which all feed into the scientific research undertaken here.

The honey from the Botanic Garden’s hives has been used in DNA barcoding research work to identify honeybee foraging patterns. Jars of the Botanic Garden’s honey, ‘Garden’s Gold’ is available to buy seasonally from our gift shop, Siop Botanica, as well as in a range of cosmetic products.

COVID-19 Safety

We have a duty of care to ensure your safety during this course, with social distancing and hygiene measures in place. You are welcome to wear your own face mask and gloves – these will not be provided.
