During this two part webinar series you will learn what a beetle is and how to distinguish them from other insects.

In part 1 you will learn about beetle anatomy and the key features needed to identify them. We will then focus on a number of common Beetle families that you are likely to come across, looking at the key features for identification.

During part 2 (9th December, 18:00 - book here) we will look at 3 or 4 more difficult to identify families for the keen beetle lovers amongst you!

Katy will give a presentation followed by a quiz and an interactive question and answer session. Please note that you will need to book part 1 and part 2 separately.

Our tutor: Katy Potts currently works at the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London where she works on chalk grassland invertebrates and Beetles, she has a degree in Conservation Biology from Plymouth University and is passionate about all things entomology and conservation. Since graduating in 2014, Katy has been working at the NHM where she was one of the trainees on ‘Identification Trainers for the Future project’, after this she then spent just under 3 years as curatorial assistant in the Coleoptera (Beetle) department where she is worked on African Beetles. Katy also ran an entomology project on a small Greek island for Operation Wallacea and Arcapelagos where she was lead entomologist. She is co-author of the Longhorn beetle FSC guide and co-organiser of the National Longhorn Beetle Recording Scheme. Katy currently works in the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity at the NHM Museum where she is working on a project called ‘Brilliant Butterflies’ which is a partnership project between the NHM, London Wildlife Trust and Butterfly Conservation conserving chalk grasslands and the important invertebrates found in them. Katy’s role is to undertake eDNA surveys and deliver ID courses to chalk grassland invertebrates.
