This seminar is for new board members/trustees in the charitable arts sector (and those who would like a refresher) to understand your roles and responsibilities, covering:

  • Setting the scene - understanding charitable structures

  • The dividing line between your role and that of the professional staff

  • Demystifying your legal and financial responsibilities

  • Effective meetings and the role of the chair

  • The board and artistic issues

  • The difference you can make as an advocate for the organisation

About the trainer:


Catriona Reynolds, Head of Governance & Engagement, Arts & Business Scotland

Catriona’s role is to support capacity building in the arts and cultural sectors, particularly in the areas of governance, management and skills development. She organises and delivers governance training for the sector and encourages business employee engagement with the arts through the transfer of their skills.

She joined Arts & Business Scotland in 2007 following ten years at Scottish Opera where she was Head of Fundraising & Sponsorship from 1999, with overall responsibility for raising funds from business, charitable trusts and private individuals. Prior to that she worked for the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, with a range of membership services responsibilities. Catriona has a degree in the History of Art from the University of Aberdeen and subsequently worked as a paintings valuer at Phillips Fine Art Auctioneers for a number of years.

She is an experienced board member in the charitable sector; formerly a Director of The Merchants House of Glasgow and the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society, and Chair of Kelvin Choir (a local community choir she helped to set up in 2009) she is currently Chair of The Royal Society for the Support of Women of Scotland, and a Director of Bloody Scotland (Scotland’s International Crime Writing Festival).
