Description

5 WEEK EVENING COURSE

THURSDAYS 4th JULY - 1st AUGUST 2019

6:00pm - 8:30pm

Learn the basics of bookbinding on this 5 week introductory course. You will make a series of books that use binding methods that you will be able to return to time and time again including pamphlet and stab stitches as well as a concertina (leporello) book. You will also use our printmaking facilities to make covers for your books using monoprinting techniques. All techniques will be taught in a step by step way in a relaxed and friendly studio atmosphere.

What experience do I need?

The course is primarily aimed at beginners but because we will be combining printing with our binding processes to produce unique books it will be equally interesting to more seasoned binders who would like a refresher.
You might want to follow this course up our Intermediate Bookbinding course or if you like the print elements you may want to try our Introduction to Printmaking course.

What will I make?

In the first session you will be introduced to a number of bindings including pamphlet stitch, concertina (leporello) and stab stitch as well as some single sheet folds. You will make a simple pamphlet stitch.

In the second session you will make some monoprints using simple stencil techniques and our printing presses that you will use to make your books with in sessions 3, 4 and 5.

In the third session you will use your prints from week two to make covers for variations on the pamphlet stitch that you learned in week one as well as a single sheet book sometimes called a hotdog book.

In the fourth session you will make a stab stitch (also known as Japanese stab stitch) book using your prints as the cover.

In the fifth session you will make a concertina book (leporello fold) that will also use your prints as the cover.

Who is my tutor?

Joanna Wilkinson has been making books for over 5 years and sells them at various art book fairs in the UK and internationally. Her practice is mainly illustration, and she loves telling a story through bookbinding too. She uses printing, collaging, analogue/slow photography and sometimes even old style colouring techniques like felt tips in her work! Joanna's books usually use Leporello fold and Japanese stab stitch as they enable the reader to experience a story rather than just turn a page.

Do I need to bring anything?

All materials and equipment will be provided. If you have any papers you wish to try feel free to bring these along with you to use.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will refund you in full if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the course, after which no refunds will be issued. Once booked, you cannot transfer to another course.
If you miss a session on the course for any reason, unfortunately we cannot offer the opportunity to attend an additional session.

What if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible but, due to the nature of the building, Leeds Print Workshop is not wheelchair accessible. There is a step up into the building and four steps down to the toilets, and no accessible toilet facilities. Should you have any questions, or wish to discuss accessibility before booking, please don't hesitate to email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
