Event description

Description

In this practical workshop you will learn how to make your own A5 notebook using the sewn board structure. This is a simple bookbinding structure that is designed to allow the book to open completely flat so that it can sit happily in your lap making it great for writing and sketching.

In this workshop you will learn about different elements of bookbinding as well as terminology for the different parts of the book. The book you create will have a book cloth spine and decorative paper covers, which you will be able to choose from a selection brought to class. All the materials used will be very high or archival quality so you know your book will be built to last!

Each skill or technique will be demonstrated and supervised, but you will be required to use a craft knife for trimming the book cloth and paper so please keep this in mind.

Suitable for all levels including beginners.

Students will need to bring a 30cm metal ruler (if possible – a few will be provided) and a sharp pencil.

Costs: £45
Times: 18.30 - 20.30
Days: 2 Thursday evenings
Dates: 5 & 12 March
Room: White
Maximum: 8

Holly is a bookbinder and book conservator working out of her Brighton studio and in a few museums and archives in London and the South East including the Tate and The National Archives. Her work focuses on marrying the beauty and craftsmanship of traditional bookbinding with contemporary design. Her books have been sold at MADE Brighton, as part of Brighton Artist Open Houses and online via her Etsy shop.

As a conservator and maker Holly has developed a great attention to detail and appreciation of the craft of bookbinding as well as its history and development. She teaches bookbinding to share that appreciation with others and give people the skills to make their own beautiful books.
