Description

Did you know that 11 million people, one in six, in the UK have a hearing loss?

And that 50% of them have experienced difficulties accessing goods and services?

Or that 70% of hearing aid users say that they would choose a business with deaf aware staff over another business or service?

This one-day introduction to Deaf Awareness and British Sign Language is suitable for those working in customer service roles in a wide range of sectors.

Attendees will learn about different types of hearing loss, barriers to communication and communication tactics, and will learn some basic British Sign Language for greeting and helping customers.

Attendees will be encouraged and supported to think about simple ways to improve communication with deaf customers in their workplace.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • have a basic understanding of deafness and different types of hearing loss
  • be able to identify barriers to access for customers with hearing loss in your workplace
  • be aware of the do's and don'ts when communicating with people with hearing loss
  • be able to use simple British Sign Language in a customer service setting
  • feel more confident in providing excellent customer service to people with hearing loss
  • be able to share your learning with colleagues
