Event description

Description

An introductory course held over five Thursday evenings

There is an old English saying:

"Sow a thought, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny".

The Buddha would have agreed with that. According to the Buddha, what we think, what we do with our minds, is the most crucial factor in how free and happy we become. This course will help us become more aware of the thoughts and habits of mind that are shaping our lives.

We'll learn two types of meditation and other practical tools for freeing up the creativity of our minds. The course will be suitable for those totally new to meditation and Buddhism, and also anyone who has learnt mindfulness meditation and wants to explore further.

When is it?

Thursdays, 7-9.30pm, from 23rd May to 20th June, 5 weeks.

How much does it cost?

We ask for a £5 registration fee to secure your place on the course and then suggest a donation when you begin the course. This money will be used to contribute to the running costs. If you feel unable to make a donation, please contact us. We wish to welcome all to The Oxford Buddhist Centre, regardless of personal circumstances.

Where is it?

The course is run at Peace House, 19 Paradise Square, Oxford. Upon arrival, the door will probably be ajar but if not ring the top bell on the right. Peace House is fully accessible so please get in touch if you think you’ll need the ramp access at the rear. One of the team will guide you to it when you arrive.

Where can I park?

Although there is no parking directly outside Peace House, there is ample parking at the Westgate Centre and at Oxpens Road car park. Peace House is a three to five minute walk away. We also recommend using the excellent Oxford Park and Ride service.

What should I wear?

Part of the session will be spent meditating, so we suggest wearing comfortable, light clothing. You will be asked to remove your shoes as you enter Peace House, so wear socks to keep your feet warm.

What should I expect on the day?

Each two hour session is a mixture of meditation, discussion and presentation of the Buddha's teachings. We translate this ancient wisdom into lessons that apply to our modern lives. We will learn about mindfulness and how this will help bring balance to our life, relationships and sense of wellbeing.

Are there refreshments provided?

Yes - we will stop for tea... sometimes with cake included :-D. There are toilet facilities and a kitchen at Peace House.

I'm not a Buddhist. In fact, I'm not religious at all. Can I still attend?

Of course - everyone is welcome. This is an introductory class and you do not need to be a Buddhist to attend. This course is perfect for people who know little about Buddhism. You do not need to consider yourself religious nor to believe in God to be a Buddhist; but we will talk more about this duing the sessions.
