Event description

Description

This course aims to introduce both willow and compressed charcoal mark making techniques. Charcoal is so versatile, it lends itself to precise and abstract marks as well as tone and chance happenings. Each session will have a different focus, exploring a range of techniques and subjects including working from a life model. We will also explore the impact of adding graphite to the charcoal image. By the end of the course, you will feel confident in using charcoal in several different ways and will have developed your own personal way of using it.

You will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook throughout the course to collect images, record notes and catalogue mark making. This will become a journal for you to reflect on the course, recall how certain marks are made and help you to continue drawing with charcoal when the course finishes.

This course is aimed at beginners.

Some basic materials and equipment, including large cartridge paper and fixative spray will be provided. Students will need to bring: A3 cartridge sketchbook, small box (varied sizes) of willow charcoal, rubber and masking tape. Compressed charcoal will be available to buy in class.
