Event description
What makes an organisation an organisation? Are you aware of how and when why you might want to register as a charity or a company?

About this Event

Making the transition from idea to an organisation can feel like a difficult leap. The way your new organisation is structured, the type of legal status you adopt, and the regulator you report to will all affect the way you need to run things, your access to funding, and the way you are perceived. For many staff members and even for some trustees, the legal and structural aspects of running a voluntary organisation are somewhat hazy, and once the basics are in place it’s all too easy to forget to go back and check what else might be necessary or possible.

This informal workshop will take you through the basics of organisational structures, governance and regulation and update you on some of the practical changes that have now started to come through since the Charities Act 2006, including the creation of the new Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).

Who should attend?

This workshop starts with the basics and builds up toward more complex legal ideas. As such, it is suitable for:

Founders and board members of very new organisations who are still in the process of finalising their governance arrangements

New trustees looking for an overview of how voluntary organisations work and what their responsibilities are likely to be

Experienced trustees and staff/volunteers looking for a refresher in charity law and governance

Trustees and staff/volunteers of organisations that are going through, or looking to go through, a phase of organisational change – for example, changing the legal status, taking on a new piece of work, or re-writing their constitution

Aims:

To provide an accessible, flexible introduction to organisational structures and charity law

To give participants an overview of the organisational structures and governance arrangements available to voluntary and community organisations

To provide an update on changes to charity, company and related law that might affect the way voluntary and community organisations work

To address common concerns and misconceptions about organisational issues

Learning outcomes:

As a result of attending this session, participants will:

- Have a better understanding of the different organisational structures available to them

- Have a clearer sense of the roles and responsibilities of charity trustees and company directors

- Be able to distinguish between an unincorporated association, a registered charity, a company limited by guarantee, a community interest company and a charitable incorporated organisation

- Understand the key advantages and disadvantages of each of the above organisational structures, and their implications for board members

Please note this event is aimed at Voluntary Organisations based or delivering work in the borough of Tower Hamlets, we have limited places so we will give priority to these groups.
