About this event
Join us for a group Folk Music Workshop, exploring and playing calming folk melodies. Creating music together as a group offers lots of opportunity to be sociable, develop your musicianship skills, and try new things. In this session, you will learn some new music, arranged especially for this workshop to suit the instruments and voices attending by Tom Hawkins. You will be expertly guided through each of the pieces you learn, building a strong sense of ensemble within the group. By the end of the session, you will have learnt some new folk music which focuses on gentle melodies, and rich harmonies.
Tom Hawkins is a musician and workshop leader based in West Yorkshire. He is a string specialist and also has lots of experience leading groups of singers in a variety of different settings. He has a Masters in Composition from the University of Huddersfield, and loves to compose and arrange music for groups of musicians of varying sizes and experience levels. Accessibility is key to Tom’s work, ensuring that activities are inclusive for everyone.
This workshop is perfect for all amateur musicians and singers. You should book your ticket if you can play a musical instrument or sing confidently in a group setting. Reading traditional sheet music isn’t a requirement, but a beginner or intermediate confidence and skill with your chosen instrument is required in order for you to get the most out of the session. When booking please tell us your level of experience to allow Tom to design compositions which play to your strengths and experience level.
What to expect from the workshop:
- Soulful folk tunes for all skill levels
- Time to play, reflect and reconnect with stillness
- Tuition with musician Tom Hawkins
- A calm and supportive atmosphere
This is a great opportunity for anyone who enjoys playing their instrument or loves singing and is looking for more opportunities to play with other people. The workshop is open to acoustic strings (including guitars) and singers, please specify which instrument you are planning to bring when booking so Tom can arrange music for you.
What to expect on the day
The Calverley Old Hall Community Space is situated in a residential area with a residential flat above and our Calverley Old Hall Landmark Holiday let next door. We are therefore keen to be considerate to our closest neighbours regarding noise levels. The musical pieces will therefore be more tranquil pieces, and we request that you bring a mute for your instrument if you have one. Mutes will be available for you to borrow if you don’t have one.
Please bring your instrument with you, or come prepared to sing, as well as a music stand and mute for your instrument if you have them.
Sheet music, hot drinks and biscuits will be provided.
This workshop is for aged 16+. Any 16/17 year olds must be accompanied by an accompanying paying responsible adult aged 18+.
