Learn how to work with sheet copper and transform it into sculptural forms.

About this event

On This Course You Will Learn: The basic techniques used to transform sheet copper into three dimensional forms. You will learn how to anneal copper so it becomes soft and maleable. We will work with hammers, stakes, anvils and other improvised tools to shape sheet metal. We will also cover joining techniques including brazeing and riveting.

What will I make on the course? At the end of the course, you will go home with one or two small objects you have made yourself. This could include a bowl or a candlestick made with a brased or soldered element.

Who is the course suitable for? The course is suitable for complete beginners who have never tried coppersmithing before. You might enjoy this course if you've been on our Blacksmithing Taster course and want to develop your knowledge of metalworking.

What is included? All materials are included in the course fee. Personal protective equipment is also provided and must be worn at all times. We will provide tea and coffee.

What should I wear? It is essential that you wear old clothes made of natural fibres i.e. not made of a flammable material such as polyester. You must also wear sturdy shoes that cover your whole foot (if you are wearing sandals you will not be allowed to participate in the course).

What should I bring? You might want to bring a notebook. Please be aware that there are no cafes or shops within walking distance of the forge, it is important that you bring a packed lunch!

Age requirements The minimum age for this class is 17 however we love working with young people and if you are the parent or guardian of someone younger than 17 who would like to join us for a class please contact us to discuss your needs.
