Introduction to Deaf Awareness

The course aim is to introduce you to BSL, deaf awareness and sign some basic signs to enable you to communicate effectively.

  • Experience what it is like to be in an unfamiliar situation using a different communication method, what it is like to lipread and the impact of this
  • Explore the social model of disability and health inequalities for Deaf people
  • Identify different groups of deaf people demonstrating how you might communicate with them differently
  • Identify the dos and don’ts in communicating with deaf people and demonstrate what you need to do if communication breaks down
  • Introduce yourself, fingerspelling your name, some basic introduction phrases and phrases linked to your current role

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

All of our courses are available to anyone over 16, please get in touch with us if you would like to attend courses and you are younger than 16, we may have other opportunities available in the near future. You will not be required to bring any ID documents.

What can I bring into the event?

You don’t need to bring anything to the session, course materials, if needed, will be given to all participants, however you may find it useful to bring something to make extra notes in. Bringing a pen or pencil is always a good idea!
