Name of course: Introduction to Solar Hot Water
Course Ref: DIYSHW2804
Duration: one day
This course is delivered by Lee Rose of Norfolk Solar, one of the leading solar hot water tutors in the UK and will cover the theory of solar hot water systems, the different types, system efficiencies and provide a thorough understanding of solar hot water as a renewable technology and an outline on how to install your own system.
It will also provide a practical demonstration as to how to fit your own system (attachments, integrating with existing plumbing system, commission and maintenance). Existing knowledge of plumbing systems is beneficial but not necessary.
The course content will include:
- What is solar thermal?
- Different kinds of solar thermal systems
- Evacuated tubes v flat plate
- System efficiencies
- Explanation of heat exchangers and storage vessels
- Explanation of the different hot water systems that people have, and how to incorporate solar hot water
Participants will have a good understanding of how a solar thermal panel is made, and will be shown how to make their own if they wish. The panel that they could make is fairly basic but it is functional and materials can be locally sourced. From here, participants can build their own panels, or have a good understanding of what to look for if they prefer to buy panels; they will also be able to source the correct parts to put together a simple solar thermal system. They will also be able to engage a professional installer with confidence if they prefer.

This fun and engaging course is being held in one of the only fully functional low carbon retrofit show homes in the South of England. Oak Tree House is an existing property that has been renovated with a wide range of low carbon technology, energy efficiency measures and renewable technology. Whilst taking your course at the house, you will have the opportunity to look around the property and learn what you could do in your own home to further reduce your carbon footprint or find out more about a renewable technology.
