About this event
Introduction to Fly Fishing Course - Season 2025
This one day course is for those with little or no experience in fly fishing. It gives you a really enjoyable day out, while providing all the basic skills and information needed to enable you to start fly fishing for yourself.
This course consists of a small group of up to 4 participants per coach
You will take home an exclusive booklet to remind you of the day and the techniques that you learned. If you catch a fish you also have the option to take this home with you (additional charge for fish processing).
You will also receive 50% off your next fly fishery ticket or Free rod hire so you can return to Kilnsey to hone your skills in the beautiful setting.
Course content:
- An introduction and overview of the course
- Fly fishing tackle, its use and design
- Setting up your fly fishing equipment
- Fly fishing knots
- Basic entomology (the fly life cycle)
- The trout & its environment
- Learn to roll and overhead cast
- Fly line management
- Guided fly fishing
- Playing and landing a fish & fish welfare
- Optional gutting and filleting demonstration

Please note that lunch and refreshments are not included, so you can either bring your own, or take advantage of the excellent cafe on site.

Yes, everything you need is provided.
Yes, you will need an Environment Agency Rod Licence rod licence to attend the course and you will be asked to present your licence before any fishing commences. You can buy a Trout and Coarse (up to 2-rod) licence at this link: https://www.gov.uk/fishing-licences/buy-a-fishing-licence
Sunglasses or polaroids (even if it is cloudy they are needed) and a hat. Also don’t forget to bring water resistant footwear and suitable clothing for all types of weather on the day. Please note that the Dales weather can be quite changeable!
An Angling Trust Licenced Coach has: - Full and appropriate safeguarding training, enhanced DBS checks; - A valid and current emergency 1st aid certificate - Public Liability & Professional Indemnity Insurance cover to the sum of £10m
