Course Description
This course introduces the principles and practice of foundry sand testing in a laboratory environment. Combining theoretical foundations with practical demonstrations, participants will perform standard tests on raw and mixed green sands, developing the skills to evaluate sand properties and relate them to casting quality and process performance.
Key Learning Outcome
- Understand the fundamentals of foundry sand and its properties.
- Perform common testing procedures, including sieve analysis, moisture content, compactability, permeability, and green strength.
- Gain confidence in interpreting test data and relating results to process control and casting defects.
- Learn the importance of sampling methods and testing frequencies.
- Apply statistical process control techniques to improve quality assurance.
- Recognise relevant health and safety practices in a laboratory environment.
Course Overview
- Health and safety requirements of all machinery, test equipment and hand tools employed in the session.
- Fundamentals of foundry sand are presented and discussed.
- The importance of pre-test sampling and typical methods.
- Identification of standard tests available and the properties they evaluate.
Course Benefits & Outcome
Upon successful completion of this CPD course, participants will gain an enhanced understanding of the properties of foundry sand and their impact on casting quality. They will also acquire practical experience in performing standard laboratory tests and in analysing results to identify potential process-related defects.
