Please note - There are two part to this course which allows you to attend one or both sessions, depending on your requirements.  

Both of the sessions take place at the The Fitzwilliam Centre, Windsor End, Beaconsfield, HP9 2JW  from 09.30am to 12.30am 

The  Course Tutor  for both sessions is  Charles Chadwick - Parish Development Adviser - Diocese of Oxford

The cost of each session is £15

Day 1 Saturday 2nd December:   09.30am -  12.30am 

Introduction to Funeral Ministry – Dying, death and loss.

 

We shall:

 

  • Reflect on how expressions of dying and death have changed over time, including contemporary culture.
  • Consider the church’s understanding of death, drawing on material from the bible, the Christian tradition and Common Worship.
  • Explore how death fits into Christian theology.

Day 2  Saturday 27th January, 2018 0930 – 1230

 

Introduction to Funeral Ministry - Funerals and the bereaved.

 

We shall:

 

  • Learn the key skills required for officiating at funerals.
  • Understand the role of other professionals, including Funeral Directors, at funerals.
  • Gain an appreciation of appropriate use of liturgies
  • Consider how funerals are embedded into parish life.
  • Explore the needs of the bereaved, as they relate to the funeral service.
  • Reflect on the meaning of this work for us
  • Look at resources appropriate for this type of work, including the online and paper resources from the Archbishops’ Council Life Events team.

Who are these courses for?

These courses are for those training as Licensed Lay Ministers or for ordination, and also a growing number of people with a passion to simply learn more about their faith, about God and our place in his world.   

 

What level?  Will I cope?

You don’t need qualifications or prior experience to get the most from these courses.  While we do provide a more structured learning environment than is possible in a local church, sessions are pitched at a level well within the grasp of most adult learners.   Level 4 courses are introductory and assume no prior knowledge.  Level 5 is more ‘intermediate’ and assumes some prior learning or experience at Level 4.  Saturday courses often cover more practical areas of ministry and can be good taster sessions for other courses.

 

Will I need to do any assignments?  Is there any homework?

While assessed work is compulsory for Ordinands and LLMs in training, there is no pressure for other ‘interested learners’ to do marked assignments.  Some sessions involve an element of preparation but we do understand that life is busy and not everyone enjoys independent study.  

 

Validation and awards

Our evening courses are delivered as part of the national Common Awards programme validated by Durham University.  So should you opt for assessed work and wish to take things a step further, it is possible to work towards a formal ‘Certificate of Higher Education’ in Theology, Mission and Ministry from Durham.  Please ask about this if you are interested.
