Level: Beginner / little or no prior fungi ID experience


Hosted by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, this course offers a deep dive into the diverse kingdom of fungi, exploring their unique biology, life cycles and their vital ecological roles.

Guided by your expert tutor, you will learn how to identify common forms and genera, as well as how to take effective ID photos for recording purposes. This outdoor session takes place at Hilton Willow Pit Nature Reserve - a wet woodland environment which supports an array of fungus types - ideal for putting your new-found field skills into practice!


If you have ever been curious about fungi but didn't know where to start, this session is sure to ignite a life-long fasciation with these extraordinary organisms.

Where can I park?

Parking is at the entrance to Hilton Nature Reserve. Please consider car sharing if travelling by car.

Can I get to the venue by public transport?

Nearest bus stop: Lucas Lane (5minute walk) - V1 Villager Service, Derby - Burton On Trent. Check times before travel.

How much walking is involved?

Please be aware this course is an outdoor course. The guided walk as part of the session will last up to 2 hours. The walk will take place in woodland on muddy paths. Please bring appropriate footwear and waterproof clothing.

What facilities will there be?

Please be aware there are no toilets or sanitation facilities on site.

If I book but I am no longer able to attend, what is your refund policy?

If you are unable to attend the course after booking please email: trainingenquiries@derbyshirewt.co.uk at least 7 days prior to the event. Unfortunately, cancellations made less than 7 days in advance of the event will not be able to claim a refund.

Can I transfer my ticket to somebody else?

What is your cancellation policy?

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust reserves the right to cancel the course at any time. Attendees will be notified at least 24 hours in advance and will be entitled to a full refund.

Will the event be postponed if there is bad weather?

Unfortunately we cannot control the weather so most courses will go ahead as planned. However, in extreme cases we may cancel/postpone if the weather is likely to pose an unacceptable risk to staff and attendees. Wherever possible, we will contact attendees prior to the event start time to advise.
