We will also touch on some different techniques for decorating your finished patterns.
A brief summary of each session:
Session 1: Mandalas with circles
Session 2: Sixfold Alhambra patterns hiding in the 'flower of life'
Session 3: Fivefold symmetry and the Golden Ratio
Session 4: Fourfold Islamic patterns that tessellate in squares
Session 5: Gothic tracery and the trefoil window
Attending the live sessions:
The course requires you to use Zoom, a free video conferencing app. Please be prepared to log into the online session 5 minutes before the start.
You will be emailed the Zoom meeting link the day before each session, with a reminder of any equipment needed for that session (see below for the list of required equipment). This information will also be accessible via the Online Event Page.
As explained above, if you are not able to attend every session 'live', please be assured that the sessions will be recorded and emailed out to you within 48 hours of each one ending.
Required equipment
Essential:
- Drawing compass with pen attachment (any decent compass will do, but I often recommend the Staedtler Mars Comfort 552 quick release compass with pen attachment)
- 30cm/12inch ruler
- An HB pencil (and a 2B is useful for tracing), sharpener and eraser
- A black, coloured or metallic pen for outlining patterns
- Plain A3 (or similar) sized paper for drawing (e.g. cartridge paper, sketchpad)
- Tracing paper and low tack tape (e.g. masking tape, washi tape)
- A colouring medium: e.g. felt tips/fineliners/coloured pencils/watercolour paints or pencils
- A surface to press on when constructing (e.g. a cutting mat, the back of a sketchpad, or simply a couple of sheets of spare paper)
Optional (if you wish to paint your designs):
- 300 gsm watercolour paper or pad. A3 is a good size
- Watercolour paints, paintbrushes and water
And any other of your favourite art equipment, e.g. metallic pens.
Looking forward to meeting you online in 2026!
