What will this course cover?

The Greek and Roman myths are, first of all, engaging stories, containing love (sometimes gentle, sometimes rough), strong passion and magic transformations. But they also convey wise insights into the nature of the world, providing images to help us see ourselves and those around with greater clarity.

We will focus chiefly on Ovid’s sophisticated retelling of the myths in his Metamorphoses, bringing in other versions of the myths as appropriate. There are translations of Ovid’s poem online, or in modern editions. There is also Ted Hughes’ loose but very lively translations (Tales from Ovid, Faber).

Podcasts will also be available, offering a discussion of each of the myths before our sessions.

What will I get out of this course?

This course will cover the rich world of Greek and Roman mythology, focusing on Ovid’s Metamorphoses as a central text while drawing on other versions of the myths to deepen understanding.

Together we will explore stories filled with love, passion, and magical transformations, while also uncovering the wisdom these myths offer about human nature and the world around us.

Alongside close reading and discussion, you’ll engage with modern translations—including Ted Hughes’ Tales from Ovid—and podcasts that provide lively introductions to each myth, helping to frame our sessions and enrich your appreciation of these timeless narratives.
