Event description

Description

Starting out in the woodlands, get a different way of looking at trees, how they grow, how they can be managed to provide a wide range of differing timber for historic woodworking.

Using the various qualities of timber and looking towards design, the very starting point of making serviceable wooden furniture.

Get experience in cleaving, shaping with axe and with drawknife and begin to feel the attraction of these ancient working practices.

All techniques will be demonstrated and guidance given constantly and continually as-needed so that each student can learn and enjoy the processes for themselves.

Students will make mallets and a charcoal-makers one-legged stool to introduce the concepts of mortise and tenon jointwork in a simple and easy-to-achieve sequence – the ideal introduction to these historic woodworking methods.

No previous woodwork experience needed, this course is designed for anyone with an interest in trees, woodlands, design or making for themselves. A reasonable level of fitness an advantage.

All materials are provided.
