Do you already have some experience of coaching and want to explore how to use these skills and approaches for working with groups? Or are you looking to create or join an Action Learning set or peer-learning network and want to develop your of experience facilitating using coaching skills? Would you simply like to refresh your coaching skills and try out group coaching as well?
The course aims to provide an opportunity to practice and refine coaching skills through RD1st Action Learning and to explore some of the ways you might use Group Coaching, including by setting up your own group.
By the end of the day you will have:
- Refreshed and recapped on core coaching skills and principles.
- Developed an understanding of the origins, principles, uses and practices of Action Learning.
- Practised several ‘rounds’ of Group Coaching, with participants having the opportunity to facilitate a set.
- Explored common facilitation challenges and how to handle them.
- Begun planning how to set up an Group Coaching set.
The workshop has a strong emphasis on practising your skills and learning from your experience. There will be a mixture of training, practice of skills and reflective sessions, as well as a short action planning session at the end to help you decide how to move forwards with your coaching practice.
The topics we cover include:
- Recap on key coaching skills and the GROW framework
- The origins, uses, practices and protocols of Action Learning
- The RD1st model of Action Learning/ Group Coaching
- The role of the facilitator in Group Coaching
- ‘Contracting’ as a group.

Frequently Asked Questions
I have done an RD1st half or full day course before - what would this course offer me?
This course is designed to build on our half and one-day introductory courses. The first part of the morning session recaps the core skills and approaches and provides opportunity for you to practice and receive feedback on your coaching, extending and refreshing your experience and skills.
I have not done an RD1st half or full day course before – is this course for me?
This course assumes some experience of coaching skills and principles, but this does not have to be through attending one of our previous courses. You may have gained this experience through Action Learning or other coaching training. The morning session starts with a recap of skills and approaches, before moving onto use Action Learning so there is an opportunity to refresh your skills and familiarize yourself with RD1st approach to coaching.
If you have never done any coaching or Action Learning then we would advise trying one of our Introduction to Coaching one-day workshops before attending this course.

RD1st is a specialist training company based in Lancaster and working across UK and internationally within the creative, cultural and non-profit sectors. Founded by Deb Barnard MBE, the RD1st team comprises five experienced trainers and coaches who, along with Deb herself, deliver RD1st courses and services.
