Introduction to Hillwalking
Date and time
LGBT Health and Wellbeing have teamed up with Skylark Guiding to offer a series of guided hill walks for LGBT+ people
About this event
We have teamed up with Gaby Macbeth from Skylark Guiding to offer a series of guided hill walks for LGBT+ folks wanting to get into the outdoors, meet others and learn new skills.
Our first walk will be Bar Hill and the Antonine Wall.
This walk traces the Antonine Wall, once the northern boundary of the Roman Empire, before a meandering return along one of the most scenic stretches if the Forth & Clyde Canal.
• Time: 3-4 hours walking plus travel to/from Glasgow (15 mins each way)
• Distance: 9km (5.5 miles)
• Elevation gain: 180m
• Terrain: good canal towpath, rough farm track and open hill. Some steep sections.
The walk will be around 9km (5.5 miles) on good canal towpath, rough farm track and open hill with a few steep sections. Please get in touch if you are unsure about the fitness required for the walk and we can discuss what to expect. We want to ensure that all folks who want to attend this walk are able to, so please email Sophie@lgbthealth.org.uk to discuss anything further.
For your safety and the safety of others it is important that you notify us of any medical issues that might affect you during the walk. Please provide details, in confidence, when registering.
About your guide
The walk will be guided by experienced and qualified guide Gaby Macbeth of Skylark Guiding. Gaby will take care of route finding and will be carrying an emergency shelter and first aid kit. For more information about Gaby's qualifications and experience see this page. You can also read what others have said about guided walks with Gaby here.
Who we welcome
Anyone from the LGBTQIA+ community around Glasgow is welcome to join us. We welcome the entire diversity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community including non-binary, queer, intersex, asexual people and all identities under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella. This includes those who are questioning or exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Registration
Spaces are limited so we need you to register in advance. The capacity of this event is 10 people to ensure social distancing can be maintained.
Bookings are for 1 person, not households or family bubbles. Even if you and a friend or partner share an email address, or if you’re also booking on behalf of a child, you must make one booking per person.
If something changes and you can no longer come along, please let us know as soon as you can so your booking becomes available for someone else.
COVID-19
As of 18th April, all COVID rules and restrictions were lifted in Scotland. However, the virus has not gone away. The Scottish Government is now promoting the use of “COVID sense” to inform how best to protect people. With that in mind, we are continuing to have COVID safety measures in place to reduce risk though we know risk can never be reduced to zero. Any event may be cancelled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances or if Scottish Government guidance changes.
The location
We will meet at 9.30am to take the train together. More details about meeting point after you register.
