Hoarding is a recognised mental health condition that can have a serious impact on safety, wellbeing, and quality of life. For professionals working in housing, health, social care, or community services, understanding how to support individuals living with hoarding behaviours is essential.
This short course provides an introduction to practical casework approaches and also serves as a foundation for the more in-depth learning offered in HDUK’s Hoarding Awareness Training Levels 1, 2, and 3. We will cover the key knowledge and tools needed to work effectively and compassionately with clients who hoard. Through real-world examples and practical strategies, the training will build confidence in engaging with clients, assessing risks, and creating achievable action plans.
The session will also highlight pathways for multi-agency working and referral, ensuring practitioners know where and how to access specialist support services. Emphasis will be placed on respectful, person-centred approaches that balance safety with client autonomy, helping to build trust and support lasting change.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Recognise hoarding as both a mental health and safeguarding concern
- Assess risk in a structured, practical way
- Apply engagement strategies and planning tools
- Identify referral routes and partnership opportunities
This course is delivered by Sarah Martin and Amber Holdway, experienced social work professionals who now partner with Local Authorities and Housing Associations to provide both practical and emotional support to individuals and families within their homes.
