Event overview:

This entry level programme is specifically designed to introduce members to the fundamental concepts behind quality improvement.

Consisting of three single day workshops, this will give participants the key knowledge and skills needed to begin carrying out improvements, and to develop a locally defined/organisationally relevant measurable improvement. Participants are therefore expected to bring an idea/issue to work on.

Who is this event aimed at?

This programme is best suited to front line staff and operational leaders looking to gain a basic understanding of the fundamental tools and techniques of quality improvement. It is also suitable as a refresher for those with existing knowledge of quality improvement.

What will attendees learn at this event / workshop?

The objectives of the programme are for individuals:

1.     To have an appreciation for the foundations of theory of quality improvement and how this is relevant in       the current NHS context

2.     To be conversant with the necessary tools, techniques and concepts required to:

  • Plan for improvement
  • Engage people in improvement
  • Test changes
  • Measure for improvement
  • Sustain and spread an improvement

3.     To practically apply the course tools by developing a locally defined/organisationally relevant measurable improvement.

Further Information:

Day 1 - 16th April, 2018

Discover and define: The focus of day 1 is on gaining insight into a problem area, making sense of the various possibilities raised and defining how improvements can be made.

Topics covered include:

  • What is Quality?
  • The Model for Improvement
  • Diagnostic tools
  • Setting aims
  • Developing change ideas (driver diagrams)
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Measurement

Day 2 - 30th April, 2018

Develop: We refine our aims and ideas and focus on how ideas can be developed and tested.

Topics covered include:

  • Refining aims and driver diagrams
  • PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, Act) cycles
  • Engaging others
  • Measurement
  • Sustainability

There will be dedicated coaching time with the course faculty.

Day 3 - 14th May, 2018

Deliver: Focus shifts to finalising projects, thinking about how to demonstrate improvement and planning for spread.

Topics covered include:

  • Using and interpreting data
  • Spread
  • Engagement – communication planning

The afternoon is dedicated to coaching to help progress improvement projects.

  1. Events are free to all Advancing Quality Alliance (AQuA) member organisations. In some cases, places can be paid for by non-members.   2. Paid places on AQuA events are non-refundable however can be transferred. If you are no longer able to attend and wish to transfer your place, please contact the team on the details above.
  3. Final event arrangements are confirmed with the venue up to two weeks before the event. In order to ensure that places are not wasted please let us know at your earliest convenience if you are no longer able to attend. Many of our events operate waiting lists so this will enable us to reallocate your place to someone else on the list.
  4. We take photographs and occasionally video/live stream at our events. We use these pictures and video on our website and in other media such as Twitter and news publications. If you do not want to be photographed or filmed please let a member of the AQuA team know at the event.
  5. By signing up for an AQuA event, we will add your contact details to our CRM system and let you know about future events, as well as send you our fortnightly e-bulletin. If you do not want to receive information from us, please let us know by sending us an email to and we will remove your name from our mailing list.
  6. Supporting resources, presentations and other materials from the event will be made available on our website after the event for 30 days.
