Introduction to Investigative Interviewing
Professional investigators do not just have conversations; they set out to establish information in dialogue.
They may be trying to clarify something, confirm a suspicion or eliminate a line of enquiry.
In the course of their work, investigators meet or talk with people that are suspects, witnesses, clients and guardians of information every day.
Often, those people are reluctant, apathetic, hostile and awkward. They may be suspicious of the investigator, even frightened of him. They may not fully understand what is happening.
It is vital that the investigator possesses good communication skills, empathy and understanding.
You will introduced to techniques used by investigators to maximise the product of dialogue.
You will begin to understand how to plan an interview and how to manage it as it develops.
You will gain an insight into how investigators listen carefully and how they discreetly encourage the flow of a conversation.
Conducting effective interviews is the very essence of good investigation work.
