Learn the basics of letterpress in a fun-filled evening at our NEW Smallprint HQ!
The session is ideal for beginners and those thinking of running their own Adana.
On the Day
Chris will teach a small group the basics of traditional letterpress printing. After some basic prep in general principles and typography (if you’re unfamiliar), you’ll learn how to hand-set type on a composing stick, transfer it to a chase and lock it up for printing. From there you’ll learn how to ink up, operate and clean an Adana 8x5 tabletop press, the most popular of ‘starter’ presses.
Projects include creating a small print, some coasters, greetings cards or postcards and you get to take home a bundle of letterpress printed goodies to show your friends and family (there may be a small extra charge for materials, if you want to print a longer run).
Come prepared with an idea of what you'd like to print. We recommend approx. 50-150 words. If you’re not sure what to print, we have a library of typography, letterpress and print books to inspire and we’re happy to chat with you before the day to advise.
- Wear old, practical clothes that you don’t mind getting inky, or bring an apron.
- Sensible footwear; no sandals or heels.
- Long hair is best tied back (we don’t want it getting trapped in the press or covered in ink!)
Please note: these letterpress workshops are not suitable for children under the age of 10 or for people who cannot stand for long periods of time. Young adults under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult.
Workshops run from 12.00pm to 4.00pm and cost £79 per person (plus booking fee).
To book, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
We can recommend eateries within a short walking distance of the studio or bring a packed lunch with you. We provide the tea, coffee and biscuits!
Private tuition (on your own Adana if you wish) is also available. Email us for more information.
If you’ve got any other questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
