This course is suitable for anyone involved in live audio in churches, whether you’re a veteran with decades of experience or a complete beginner looking to get started. You might be a regular member of your church’s volunteer sound team, a pastor, warden or caretaker who occasionally has to operate audio equipment, or a musician or worship leader seeking a better understanding of what your sound operator actually does.
This course takes a ground up approach to understanding acoustics, sound system design and configuration, how to use the sound desk, how to run a sound check and assemble a mix, and how to troubleshoot and manage common problems in church sound. For beginners this offers an extensive foundation in fundamental sound engineering principles, whilst for more experienced operators this is a great opportunity to refresh your understanding of core concepts, plug any knowledge gaps and ensure habits are aligned with best-practices.
- Fundamental audio concepts: frequency, loudness, decibels and sound perception.
- Basic acoustics: sound propagation, how does sound behave in an indoor space? Why is sound so difficult in churches?
- Understanding the sound system: overview of sound systems for live sound re-enforcement, loudspeakers and microphones.
- What are the goals for a sound system?: system design fundamentals, the hierarchy of importance.
- What do all the knobs do?: understanding the sound desk.
- How to run a sound check: including practical experience using multi-track playback.
- Putting the mix together: including practical experience using multi-track playback and discussion of appropriate mixing for different musical styles and contexts.
- Discussion and practical experience of handling common church sound problems: feedback, “it’s too loud”, troubleshooting processes.
There are no prerequisites for this course. This course is suitable for students of all levels of ability and prior experience.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
All courses are hosted at SFL’s facilities in Reading unless otherwise stated. Our address is: SFL Group, Unit 5, Headley Park 10, Woodley, Reading, RG5 4SW
If coming by public transport the nearest station is Winnersh Triangle, which is around five minutes away by taxi (not walkable). The nearest major transport hub is Reading Station, from here we are around 20 minutes by taxi or the number 13 bus will get you within walking distance (alight at Headley Road).
Parking & Access:
When you arrive please come to our visitors’ entrance, this is at the rear of the building on the far side from our trade entrance. To get here make your way all the way to back of the estate (past the trade yard) and turn right at the end, SFL is on your right after you come round the corner.
Marked visitors’ parking bays are on your right. There is additional general parking opposite the visitors’ parking bays if these are all full, and further parking can be found around the estate.
The visitors’ entrance is immediately adjacent to the visitors’ parking bays. Please come through the outer door and then ring the intercom for access.
We politely request that visitors avoid parking directly outside of other businesses or in marked bays belonging to other businesses. Also please be aware that large goods vehicles require access around the estate at all times, please take this into consideration and in particular we ask that you avoid parking in any of the trade yards.

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
Bookings are made for a specific course on a specific date and are not transferrable, however we are happy for you to nominate another named individual to take your place should you be unable to attend. Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No. Your details will be checked at registration but a copy of your ticket is not required.
What is the refund policy?
Once confirmed bookings on SFL training courses are non-refundable. We cannot accept cancellations and no refund will be offered if you are unable to attend, however you may nominate another named individual to attend in your place.
Cancellations due to extenuating circumstances may be considered for deferral to a future course at SFL’s discretion. SFL’s decision in such matters is final, previous decisions do not establish a precedent.
In the unlikely event that SFL have to cancel or reschedule a course and you are unable to make the new dates a full refund will be provided.
The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

For group bookings this is fine so long as at least one of the group matches a named ticket and is able to confirm the details of the other attendees at registration.
