Every journalist needs to have an understanding of how the law applies to their trade. New rules covering social media, online publishing and libel mean it's important to stay abreast of developments, even if you've had previous media law training.

This engaging event from David Banks, co-author of three editions of the indispensable McNae's Essential Law for Journalists, will give you an up-to-date working knowledge of the current laws governing libel, social media, privacy, data protection and contempt of court. You'll also learn how press regulation is set to change, and how the new regulatory models will affect you. In today's tumultuous publishing climate, knowing the law is your best insurance against potentially devastating legal consequences.

Course description

The course combines presentations on various areas of media lawm, combined with practical group workshops in which you'll explore real-life legal scenarios in an easily digestible way. Tutor David Banks, who has provided media legal training for Trinity Mirror and the Crown Prosecution Service will provide feedback to ensure participants receive a nuanced grasp of the laws and issues they pertain to. This comprehensive courses also offers dedicated Q&A segments and a takeaway pack of slides, notes and specially-written guidelines. Subjects covered on the day include;

Tutor profile


David Banks
is co-author of the three most recent editions of McNae's Essential Law for Journalists, the standard text on media law. He has been involved in training journalists since 1999, firstly with Trinity Mirror Editorial Training. Since 2006he has been a training consultant working with a range of media organisations – delivering law and ethics training to national newspapers, broadcasters and digital publishers. He also works with a range of non-media organisations delivering media law training tailored to their needs – the Ministry of Justice, the Crown Prosecution Service, various local authorities, charities such as Friends of the Earth, AgeUK and Rethink, and a number of police forces.
