Introduction to Mosses and Lichens

By Dorset Wildlife Trust

Overview

Explore the hidden world of mosses & lichens—join botanist Jim White to learn more about these amazing ancient plants.

Join us at Kingcombe National Nature Reserve for a day in the field exploring the overlooked yet extraordinary realm of mosses and lichens. These ancient, non-flowering mosses create lush carpets, cushion rocks, and weave miniature forests that many walk past without a second glance.

Lichens are remarkable composite organisms formed by a symbiotic partnership between a fungus (the mycobiont) and a photosynthetic partner (the photobiont), which is usually either a green alga or a cyanobacterium. These partners live together so tightly that they function as a single, stable organism. Some lichens produce colorful pigments that protect them from intense sunlight.

Jim White is one of the county's top botanists and has a long-standing history with Kingcombe Meadows and Dorset Wildlife Trust. Jim is a wonderful tutor and has a wealth of knowledge, having studied botany at university, followed by a successful career which led him to work for organisations including English Nature.

What to bring: A hand lens, identification books if you have them, FSC ID guides are available to buy, notebook, appropriate clothing and footwear as you will be walking outdoors.
