This session will introduce the concepts behind Natural Language Processing (NLP), that is, using machines to analyse, understand and generate language.

We'll start things off with a primer on what NLP is and how it is used. Following that we will then dive into three short 10-minute case studies from practitioners using NLP in education, healthcare and commercial settings. Finally, we'll wrap up with a Q&A with the speakers.

Speaker bios:

Dr Lorna Harper is a Clinical Scientist and Head of Software and Informatics in the Medical Devices Unit, a specialist unit within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The Medical Devices Unit specialise in the design, development and regulation of bespoke medical devices across a range of clinical services.

Dr Stuart Grey is the founding CEO of Student Voice and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. Student Voice’s machine learning models have been used to analyse free-text comment data from over 100 UK universities to help them listen to students from typically underrepresented groups.

Gianluca Maruzzella is the Co-founder & CEO at indigo.ai a B2B SaaS platform that uses artificial intelligence to improve the communication between businesses and users.
