Introduction to Night Navigation

Purpose

To practise navigation skills at night.

Description

We will meet at Cregennan Lakes Car Park - toilets avaiable here. Sunset is 18:10 so we will spend time brushing up on skills like pacing, before having time to practise this in the dark.

The session will be spent 'on the hill'. Initially we will look at micro navigation skills, compass bearings and pacing as a way of moving from one known point to other features..

What level is this?

You should be confident with being outdoors for 6 hrs. You should be confident that you can spend the time in the mountains and are prepared for any weather. We will not be covering a huge amount of ground, but as an indication it will be a maximum of 10km.

Required equipment

• Clothing for evening on the hills – this should be warm, and be full waterproof body cover
• A head torch
• Footwear suitable for a mountain environment
• Food that will keep you fuelled for the session
• At least 500ml of water
• Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 OL23 (available to borrow if you don't have one)

We provide the loan of quality Silva Ranger compasses for the day

Delivered by qualified mountain leaders – we provide fully insured mountain guiding.
