During this course you will be introduced to the basics of oil painting, gaining confidence working with oil paints as you learn through making. The tutor will guide you through three different ways to start a figurative painting, showing you how each process affects the painting's outcome and encouraging you to understand which way fits best with your painting style and personal goals.

This course is beginner friendly, starting with the basics of working in oil paint but also appropriate for those wanting to gain confidence.

All materials are provided but students are encouraged to bring their own brushes if they have them. Please bring a colour photograph that you wish to paint from, keep this simple e.g. a still life or single figure.

Chris is a visual artist working with painting in the expanded field. They have a BA (Hons) in Painting from the University of Brighton and an MLitt in Fine Art Practice from Glasgow School of Art. Their work moves between figurative and abstract painting, predominately working in oils they engage with the rich history of painting, exploring ideas of the iteration, myth, queer culture and materiality. Chris has exhibited throughout the UK, taken part in artist residencies both in the UK and China and worked on multiple commissions, with their practice now based at Phoenix Art Space.

Chris is in the early stages of their teaching career and aims to build on their experience through the Phoenix Art Space course programme. This is reflected in the current course ticket price.

About the courses at Phoenix Art Space

Phoenix Art Space's courses provide a mix of high quality workshops aimed at practicing, and aspiring artists and art lovers. They are suitable for anyone (including beginners unless otherwise stated) who wants to learn new skills from professional artists and would like to meet likeminded people in a supportive and creative environment. We normally provide all the basic materials unless stated in the course descriptions. You need to sign up in advance as some popular courses fill up very quickly.

All courses are aimed at adults (over 18) unless otherwise stated. Course fees are kept as low as possible to encourage everyone to participate in the arts, including those on low incomes but not eligible for benefits, such as many artists. Therefore we do not offer separate concessionary rates for members of the public. We are unable to offer discounted rates for other reasons, for instance if you are unable to attend all the sessions, unless the course has already started and has unfilled spaces.

We accept payments online by credit or debit card and PayPal. Offline payment options are only available when booking a ticket in person at the Phoenix Art Space front desk during gallery opening hours.

We regret we are unable to provide car or bicycle parking facilities (except for students with disabilities).

If you have any additional needs please let us know and we will endeavour to accommodate them. We have disabled access on the ground floor where the courses are held, including a ramp and toilet facilities. Please email chloe@phoenixbrighton.org for information.

Booking Terms and Conditions:

Refunds require 2 weeks notice prior to the start of the course and will involve the deduction of our costs such as transaction fees or bank charges. If less than less than 2 weeks notice is given prior to the course start date we regret that refunds or transfers to other courses are NOT possible.

Courses are aimed at over 18s.

If a course is cancelled we will endeavour to give as much notice as possible by sending participants an email. It is rare for us to cancel courses but it occasionally happens due to events beyond our control, in that case we refund the payment in full.

Please ensure you check your email before a class starts as we or the tutor may be in touch with instructions/advice.
