Overview
What do you know about wild orchids: their life cycles, where to find them, and how to identify them? Discover all this and more.
Kent has an extraordinary diversity of orchid species. This day will provide an introduction to a range of local orchids and their complex pollination behaviours, including looking for some in flower at Monkton.
An indoor session at will cover:
- What is an orchid?
- Orchid lifestyles and behaviour.
- An overview of the Kent species and where to find them, plus brief discussion of the wider British orchid flora.
- Where and when to look for orchids in Kent.
- Useful books.
In the afternoon, we will search for some of the 11 orchid species found at Monkton, including seven species which should be in flower in early June.
By the end of the course it is expected that participants will:
- Identify the key features of an orchid
- Gain an understanding of their life cycles including the special relationships with fungi and pollinating insects
- Where to look for orchids in Kent
- Gain confidence in identifying orchids in the field
