Introduction to Pathological demand avoidance
IMPORTANT TERMINOLOGY NOTE: There is a shared agreement that you cannot get a standalone diagnosis of PDA. However, it is widely accepted as a profile of autism. These webinars promote the use of the term "Autism with a PDA profile" to be adopted and disseminated across agencies countywide. This consistent terminology helps parent carers access appropriate provision and support. Part 1 covers: What is a PDA profile of autism and why we use 'Autism with a PDA profile' • How PDA is linked to the nervous system • Understanding distressed behaviours and helpful approaches • Different presentations of PDA (internalized/externalized) • Practical strategies • Masking and its impact • Real-life insights from lived experience • Red flags of burnout and hitting crisis The second part dives deeper into PDA and the third part is aimed at professionals with emphasis on lived experience.
