Introduction to Peatland Restoration - Armadale

By UHI North, West and Hebrides

Overview

This 2 day course will give you an overview on the make up and ecology of Peatlands and the theory behind restoration techniques needed.

Work to restore Scotland’s peatlands is accelerating to help meet climate change targets. This introductory course, based in the Flow Country, is aimed at those interested in getting involved in restoration work.

The course will blend classroom sessions in Armadale Hall with discussions on a nearby peatland where restoration work is currently taking place.

Topics covered indoors and onsite will include:

  • The formation, functioning and importance of peatlands
  • Restoration measures used to repair degraded peatland, with a specific focus on drain blocking, drain reprofiling, gully blocking and hag reprofiling which will be observed on site
  • Access considerations, including protection of watercourses
  • Protected species and licencing
  • Spatial data capture
  • Peatland ACTION funding and processes, including project management, liaison and reporting
  • The IUCN Peatland Code
  • The influence of habitat and environmental condition on restoration outcomes
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of restoration
  • Health and Safety and managing CDM requirements on a peatland site.

The training is fully-funded by NatureScot Peatland ACTION. However, places are limited and anyone booking a place and failing to turn up may be charged a proportion of the cost of their place.

Joining instructions: The course starts in the Main Hall of Armadale Hall.

Delegates must bring sufficient warm and waterproof clothing and footwear to allow for being outside in winter for a number of hours.

This training is funded through NatureScot Peatland ACTION.
