Event description

Description

Join us at the London Centre for Book Arts for a one-day Introduction to Press Maintenance, led by veteran press engineer Basil Head.

A great opportunity for those who already own, or are planning to own a letterpress proofing press of their own. The introduction will cover table-top presses such as Adanas, and larger, cylinder presses such as Vandercooks or FAGs. This workshop is perfect for people who wish to learn more about how to properly run and maintain a letterpress printing press.

The introduction will be demonstrated on the presses in use at the London Centre for Book Arts, including a Vandercook, FAG, Stevenson Blake and a table-top Adana. The principles covered during the workshop can be applied to most types of presses, and will include fundamentals such as packing, inking, looking after and adjusting rollers, and maintenance best practice.

There will be a chance to discuss specific presses and issues as a group with Basil and Simon throughout the session.

Basil Head is an expert press engineer with more than 50 years of experience, specialising in letterpress cylinder proof presses. Famous in the UK letterpress community, Basil regularly repairs and services presses nationwide.

Upon leaving school, Basil worked and trained at a machine tool company that was contracted to manufacture two hundred letterpress proof presses by an American firm, Vandercook and Sons. Since then, Basil has built, sold, repaired and serviced countless presses, becoming one of the few remaining expert press engineers still practising in the country.

Simon Goode is an artist, educator, and founding director of the London Centre for Book Arts.

All materials and tools provided.
