The problems we seek to address as organisations are usually complex. In order to gain a deeper understanding and choose the approach that is most effective there are a number of different tools to help unpack problems and break them down, making them more manageable as well as helping us prioritise. One of those tools is a problem tree analysis, which will be introduced in this session. The result of this analysis can form the basis of a theory of change.

A theory of change is more than simply a model of what you do and the impact you have as an organisation or through a specific programme. A good theory of change that is kept live is the basis for strategy, decision-making, monitoring and evaluation as well as communication.

Theories of change come in all different shapes and forms. They can depict the macro (organisational) or micro (project/programme) level and be descriptive or developmental in nature. But the significance of theories of change goes beyond the simple output – the process of getting there is often just as important if not even more so than the graph or flowchart you have to show for it at the end.

Participants will build their knowledge on:

Exploring and articulating problems, their causes and effects by using problem tree analyses
The basics of what is meant by a theory of change;
The different shapes it can take;
The process of developing one and pitfalls to avoid and
Choose an approach that works for you.
