Introduction to Protected Species on Peatlands - Armadale

By UHI North, West and Hebrides

Overview

This training focuses on the identification, conservation, and management of protected species in peatland restoration projects.

This training is funded through NatureScot Peatland ACTION

Peatlands are vital for biodiversity and carbon sequestration, supporting unique species that are often legally protected due to their ecological importance.

This training is an overview of the type of species found on peatland, how to identify them and their habitats. This is an introduction to the conservation and management laws around these species.

Participants will gain an introductory understanding of:

• Protected Species: How to identify key protected species in peatlands.

• Legal Framework: The laws and regulations that protect these species, such as the Habitats Directive.

• Threats to Species: The main risks to protected species, including habitat degradation, climate change, and invasive species.

• Field Visit: A visit to peatlands to look at the kind of terrain and areas you may find protected species.

By the end of the training, attendees will be equipped with the skills needed to protect peatland habitats and the species that rely on them. This course is ideal for anyone who has a limited knowlegde of peatland species but is likely to work on peatlands in any capacity.

Attendees will need to bring suitable footwear and clothing for being out on Peatlands. Walking boots and waterproofs are recommended. There will be some off road travel on well used tracks. If you have a vehicle capable of off-road use, it would be advantageous to take it. Please bring a packed lunch with you for the course.

We are often over-subscribed and have a waiting list for this training. As a result, cancellations within 48 hours of the training and no-shows may be charged full course costs.
