Event description

Description

***YOU MUST BE A MEMBER OF STAFF AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON TO BOOK ON THIS WORKSHOP***

Would benefit: academic staff wanting to know more about research integrity - suitable for any discipline

Examples of research misconduct tend to focus on notorious cases that have hit the headlines. In most such cases there has been a clear intent to deceive, and the actions of the researchers involved has been blatantly unscrupulous. However, in reality many instances of research misconduct are lesser transgressions that do not stem from a deliberate intention to mislead or deceive, but are rather the results of sloppiness, cutting corners or a lack of rigour in planning that have led to a series of poor decisions. This workshop will look at some common barriers to research integrity and causes of misconduct, and will use case studies to illustrate how these can lead to poor research practice. Some practical ideas on how you can avoid pitfalls by improving the planning, management and conduct of research will be discussed.

Previous feedback: “Useful case studies…as a new member of staff it helped familiarise me with the basics of research misconduct.”
