Sashiko is a form of embroidery originating in Japan. Create your own beautiful patterns with a simple running stitch.
About this event
Sashiko is used not just to produce beautiful repeat patterns, but also to reinforce clothing and add warmth by stitching through layers of fabric. We tend to think of Sashiko as cream stitching on an indigo fabric, but there are many examples using colours. You can stick with tradition or create wonderful, contemporary looks using different coloured fabrics and threads.
This interactive online workshop ‘Introduction to Sashiko’ is run as one 2 hour session on Zoom. This allows you time to master the basics of preparing and stitching a delightful lavender sachet or coaster.
Friday 18 February - 7pm - 9pm
Learn the basics of Sashiko: the threads, fabrics and equipment that you can use, and tips on using the different mark-making tools. Prepare your fabric with your chosen design and then start stitching and put into practice what you have learnt about ensuring accurate and beautiful results in Sashiko.
This online workshop is run as a small, friendly group with a maximum of 8 people. There will be plenty of time to ask questions and receive help and advice, on any aspect of the process, before completing your own pieces.
You can choose to either order the Introduction to Sashiko Kit (available UK only) or the downloadable templates in pdf format (booklet also included) when you book the workshop.
For those who order the kit you will be sent a list of some basic equipment you need to provide, such as ruler and mat, in advance.
A more detailed list of requirements will be sent to those who request templates only.
