Description

Introduction to service design training

The Government Digital Service (GDS) user-centred design team regularly run service design training. Service design is the design of services. A service is something that helps someone do a thing, like learn to drive.

What you’ll learn

During the training, you’ll be introduced to a range of topics and skills.

What is a service?

What is service design?

What are the benefits of service design?

What does a service designer do?

How does a service designer work with other roles?

By the end of the course you will be able to:

Understand how a service designers’ focus differs from other members of the team

Use a service design tool appropriately by researching, finding and applying the right tool for a problem

Understand how a service designer would approach framing a problem

Use a journey map to analyse a service

The training contains some theory and lots of paper-based exercises and activities (individual, in pairs and in groups). You'll meet lots of people from many different roles and organisations in government. You do not need to prepare anything and slides will be provided.

Eligibility

You must currently have a job as a public servant or civil servant. This means you are working in a central government department, local government, NHS, Parliament, arms-length body or regulator.

You must be a permanent employee not a contractor or supplier to government.

You must be able to attend the whole 1 day or 7 hour course.

This course is not for people who are already service designers.

We may collect diversity information in the registration form so that we can ensure there is a diverse representation of people attending the course.

Getting there

There is no car parking available on-site. There are National Car Park (NCP) car parks nearby. This will be your own responsibility to find car parking spaces.

The Ofsted building entrance is called Piccadilly Gate and is next to Piccadilly Station car park at the back of the station. This entrance has large escalators, with no other way of getting down the stairs.

An accessible ground-level entrance to the building is on Store Street. Accessible toilets are on the same corridor as the event room. We will be on the ground floor for the entire day.

The easiest route to the office from Piccadilly station is to take the exit next to Platform 1, walk 20 seconds across the car park and you will see Picaddily in the building. So many visitors end up getting lost trying to use the store street entrance.

On the day

Arrive before 9:45am ready for a 10:00 start and we will finish at 5pm.

Please bring your cross-government passes with them. If you bring your pass, you will not need to get another pass from the desk. Upon arrival, please give your name to the Reception staff who will direct you to the room.

Lunch will be at 12:30 for approximately an hour and there will be a short break in the morning and afternoon. Lunch will not be provided. All attendees can access the PG café area via corridor leading from the meeting rooms area. You do not need to provide a pass. Tap water will be provided in the rooms for all three days.

You must commit to the whole day. If you are unable to attend for the whole day, please let us know. We prefer not to have people leave early, start late or drop in and out of the day as it is unfair to the other group members and people on the waiting list.

If there is anything we can do to enable you to be able to fully participate in this course, contact ucdcommunity@digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk.

We are working towards being a fully inclusive community. We always aim to arrange our events to be inclusive and accessible. But, please let us know if you have specific requirements or anything you need us to know.

Please be prepared to give us feedback on the session as it is always being iterated!
