This session will provide an overview of Service Design, why it’s useful and how it is being used to improve services and systems. It will also delve into why we design services and the impact of using a design methodology.

Service Design provides a creative methodology to help improve or innovate service experiences that result in more satisfied users (staff, customers, partners, etc.) and more profitable or sustainable organisations.

You will have the choice of two dates for this Introductory Session, either the 26 October or 3 November, which you can choose when you click 'select a date'

This introductory session is followed by a further three sessions which makes up a training programme around the principles, tools and methods of Service Design. The dates for the next sessions are:

Wednesday 17th November, 2-5pm: Setting Up & Explore
Wednesday 1st December, 2-5pm: Idea Generation
Wednesday 15th December, 2-5pm: Prototyping & Delivering Services

Who is this session for:

Anyone who designs, delivers or uses services and wants to find out more about how the practice of Service Design can improve services in your area for the long term. Attending this session will help you to decide whether to come on the training programme to build your skills and experience in using Service Design in your community.

This is aimed at anyone in the six communities that are working with Lloyds Bank Foundation on system change - Great Yarmouth, Redcar and Cleveland, Bolsover, Telford and Wrekin and Halton.

Please note, as places for the sessions starting on 17th November are more limited due to the nature of the sessions, we plan to prioritise organisations based locally in the each of 6 communities.

More about this session & training programme

These sessions are being run by Dr Laura Warwick, a Senior Lecturer in Service Design and Social Innovation at Northumbria University. She works with local and national organisations, including Mind, The National Lottery Community Fund and GirlGuiding UK, to support them to use Service Design to improve their services and systems. She is currently supporting Lloyds Bank Foundation with their People and Communities work in six communities across England and Wales.

This programme is a practical, interactive introduction to the principles, tools and methods of Service Design. It will give you an overview of what service design is and how it can be applied in a real context to help create better services for both users and service providers.

Setting Up & Explore will take you through setting-up a service design project and how to do design research. You will develop and try out some key research methods that help you to explore your chosen issue from a user-centred perspective.

Idea Generation is focused on how you make sense of your research and use that understanding to generate new ideas. It will take you through the main steps in analysing and prioritising your findings, as well as some of the key approaches to idea generation.

Prototyping & Delivering Services introduces you to ways you can prototype and test your service to get valuable feedback. We will then look at how design can support you to package up and communicate your final solution.
